If you are a sufferer of anxiety you know how debilitating and life-altering it can be. It takes the simplest of tasks and makes them seem impossible, place unnecessary fear on an otherwise safe + potentially pleasant situation, and make you feel like a straight up crazy person.

I have tried numerous methods to cope with my anxiety. Medication, therapy, meditation, yoga, and essential oils just to name a few. And while each of these methods made a difference and an impact--I've found that the tried at true best methods for me have been taking the more natural route with essential oils, meditation + yoga. (Remember--we are all different so the way to best manage our anxiety is going to look different for everyone!)

Just so you know, I haven't perfected this. I still have my moments of weakness. But for the most part these practices have been greatly beneficial in helping me to keep calm + carry on in the face of an anxiety attack.

Here are my Essential Oil go to's:

1. Balance. Every day I apply Balance to the bottom of my feet and back of my neck. I also diffuse daily (typically during my boys' nap time). Balance is a blend of Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile with Fractionated Coconut Oil to offer an enticing fragrance that promotes tranquility and relaxation. Spruce, one of the oils in dōTERRA Balance, was used by Native Americans for health and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile can ease anxious feelings, while Frankincense provides a grounding, balancing effect on emotions.

2. Serenity Softgels. When I feel an anxiety attack coming on or am undergoing stress that I worry will lead to anxiety I take a Serenity Soft gel. While these are typically used to promote a good night's sleep, I have found that they work wonders with my anxiety. For more info on Serenity Softgels, click here!

3. Peace. This is my personal favorite blend from doTERRA's aromatherapy line. It is a blend of Vetiver Root, Lavender Flower, Ylang Ylang Flower, Frankincense Resin, Clary Sage Flower, Marjoram Leaf, Labdanum Leaf/Stalk, Spearmint Herb. Perfect for diffusing or applying topically. I like to use the aroma-touch roller bottle version of this blend and apply to my heart.

4. Copiaba. Taken internally, Copaiba helps soothe and support the nervous system. Although Copaiba does not contain psychoactive cannabinoids, the main component caryophyllene may be neuroprotective and have cardiovascular and immune benefits. I apply a drop of this directly under my tongue daily. If you don't care for the taste, you could also take in a veggie cap.

These oils with daily mediation and yoga practice have been life changing for me.

5. Personalized Rollerbottle blends. On certain days I'll prefer different oils + blends and whip up my very own essential oil blend in my favorite little roller bottles from Oil Life. These ones here with the gem roller balls are my number one favorite go-tos!

Purify is our BFF in the laundry room. We add it to every load of laundry for its cleansing properties + clean scent. We also like to use a couple drops on our wool dryer balls with each load that goes through the dryer. Do you use wool dryer balls!? If not you should, and here's why:

Why Wool Dryer Balls?

+    Decrease drying time, saving you money on utility bills. (Especially helpful in the winter months!)

+    Commercial fabric softeners and dryer sheets are filled with harmful chemicals and perfumes that coat your clothing, eventually ending up on your skin. These chemicals can be especially harsh on sensitive skin. There are no chemicals in wool dryer balls!

+    Commercial dryer sheets can be costly, and are thrown away after use. Wool dryer balls can be re-used for years.

+    Wool dryer balls won’t affect the absorbency of your towels, kitchen cloths, or cloth diapers – commercial softeners will.

+    100% wool dryer balls increase fluffiness and reduce static as dryer loads tumble.

+    Dryer balls help to soften clothes naturally.

+    Dryer balls are made from a renewable resource.

You can buy my favorite here!

4. Wild Orange.

Wild Orange.jpg

Wild Orange is the oil that I use interchangeably with Lemon all the time in my cleaning! Wild Orange also contains cleansing properties that make it a wonderful tool in your cleaning cabinet. I also love to diffuse Wild Orange daily to cleanse the air and promote positive feelings and good energy.

5. Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

FullSizeRender 59.jpg

Melaleuca has some amazing cleansing properties as well. It has high antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti fungal properties that make it the fifth and final must have for my home. I love to add a few drops to my all purpose cleanser blend when deep cleaning grimy places like the bathroom that need a little extra oomph. Not only does it work wonders, it also smells so fresh & clean!

There you have it, my top 5 oils for the home. Do you have any other must have oils on your list!? If so, share in the comments below. I love hearing about how you are using your oils!

H2Oils

The key to healthy living is HYDRATION! Sometimes it can be difficult to remember to drink more water...and sometimes just plain ol' H2O just doesn't do it for the taste buds. The two things that have helped me stay hydrated are:

1. Having a cute water bottle. I'm obsessed with my S'Well Bottle! (You can shop them below!) Not only does it look good, it keeps my drink nice and cold ALL DAY LONG.

2. EO's in my H20. I love to flavor my water! My face oils to drink are: Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, and the Slim & Sassy metabolic blend from doTERRA. (It's fun to have so many choices, so my water is NEVER BORING.)

Essential Oils in your water do more than just add a yummy flavor, they also make for great supplements to keep your body healthy! Lemon and Wild Orange are great for detoxifying the body, and Grapefruit and Slim and Sassy helps with weight loss & curbing sugar cravings.

Want to shop some of these oils to try in your water? SHOP HERE. Want to hear how you can get them at 25% OFF!? Send me an email with the subject "H2Oils Please!" to learn more.

What are Essential Oils? The Basics.

Essential Oils .jpg

Essential Oils are all the rage right now. With our world re-recognizing the power & benefits of natural remedies, it seems as though EO's are everywhere. When I was first introduced to Essential Oils, I had no idea what they really were. My grandmother had recommended them to me as a remedy to help support my son's digestive system as he was suffering from tummy troubles. (I'll go more into my story another time...) So, I trustingly applied them to the bottom of his feed & tummy (because that's what she told me to do.) And that was my first "experience" with Essential Oils. The first thing I learned about them is that THEY WORK.

Of course, after I saw great success in using them, I had to learn more! So I did lots of reading, research, & asked LOTS of questions. After learning more about the oils, what they are, and how they work, I fell even more in love with the idea of using them in my home and with my family. In my research, I found a LOT of studies using scientific diagrams and filled with words I couldn't pronounce, let alone understand...so for all you simple minded folks like myself--this is a BASIC guide of the 5 things you should know about Essential Oils.

1. The definition of ESSENTIAL OILS:
Essential Oils are substances created inside aromatic plants (plants with an aroma or scent) that are both volatile (they evaporate), and oil soluble (they mix easily with oils and fats.) -Modern Essentials
Need an even more basic explanation? Essential Oils are natural extracts from the seeds, stems, roots, flowers, bark and other parts of plants. If you've ever experienced the aroma of a flower, tree, or fruit what you are experiencing is the power of Essential Oils. But, Essential Oils are so much more than a pretty smell! There are so many benefits to using essential oils, it's truly amazing. Essential oils have been used throughout history in a variety of wellness applications. They are a natural and safe approach to healthcare and wellness. And best of all: they are EFFECTIVE.

2. How Essential Oils Work (very basically)
A little science lesson for you- When you are diagnosed with a bacterial infection your doctor typically gives you a prescription for antibiotics. However, with a viral infection, he/she will send you home to "rest and drink lots of fluids." that is because antibiotics are not effective against viruses which are found inside the cells. Essential oils, however, are able to get inside the cell and are effective against outside threats found on the inside and outside of cells. Pretty interesting, huh?

3. If you want results, you should always use CERTIFIED PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE Essential Oils.
I'm sure many of you have walked through your local health food store and found a shelf full of "essential oils" for prices as low as $5 a bottle and you're thinking to yourself "WHAT A DEAL!?" I mean yeah, it's a great deal if you're looking for a bottle of nice smelling oil to spritz in your home for an air freshener...but if you're in search of something you would put on yourself or your children in an effort to help support your body, then back away from that bottle! That is why for myself and my family, I only use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) oils through doTERRA. Not only do they provide myself and my family with CPTG oils, but they go above and beyond doing good for others through sourcing the best oils. You can check out more about that HERE.
Essential Oils embody the regenerating, protective, and immune-strengthening properties of the plants they come from which is why you want to make sure that you essential oils that you are using are actually from the plants they claim to be coming from. If not, then the essential oils you are using simply embody the synthetic combination of chemicals used to create the oil which doesn't really sound like something I want to rub on my body, or my children's.

4. There are 3 ways to use Essential Oils: Aromatically, Topically, & Internally

This one is going to be very brief as I will have an entire post dedicated to this topic right here.

Aromatic: Through diffusion, using essential oils aromatically is beneficial to psychological wellbeing. Good smells make us feel good. Some oils have a stimulating aroma, while others are calming and soothing.

Topical: Due to their molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed through the skin and can be very beneficial when applied SAFELY. Because these oils are PURE and STRONG in nature, you should always use safety precautions when using them topically. While many oils are safe to use "neat" or on their own, dilution is a great way to safely use essential oils topically. Dilute with a carrier oil. My carrier oil of choice is Fractionated Coconut Oil. It's scent-free and in liquid form making it easy to mix with oils. There isn't an EXACT science (maybe there is, but not one I'm aware of...) to diluting, but here is a handy guide to help you dilute SAFELY for your little ones.

Internal: Essential Oils can also be used as dietary supplements. Some are known for their antioxidant properties, while others are great for inflammation. MOST Essential Oils are safe for ingestion but NOT ALL are. So make sure that before using an oil internally you check that the bottle specifies that it may be used for that purpose!

5. You do not have to be an expert to use essential oils safely & correctly. You just need to be literate.

Confession: I am not as much of an Essential Oil expert as I may seem...the truth is most of this information I have learned from the amazing resources I have in my home. The two books I would recommend to anyone and everyone looking to begin their journey as oilers are Modern Essentials & The Essential Life. You can purchase these books here: MODERN ESSENTIALS & here: THE ESSENTIAL LIFE.

And of course, there are so many great people out there sharing their tips and tricks for using essential oils out there! One thing I LOVE about the Essential Oil community is that everyone is always willing to share how they use their oils and their story.

So, there's my very brief, very simple, guide to Essential Oils & the TOP 5 things you should know. Questions? I love them. Comment below or contact me!

Aromatic. Topical. Internal. All the ways to SAFELY use Essential Oils.

Essential Oil safety is a HOT topic right now. Why? Because the market for Essential Oils is EXPLODING! People everywhere are in search of the best way to care for themselves and many are finding that best way to be through the use of essential oils. That being said, there are many companies out there taking advantage of this and in an effort to make a pretty penny, they're putting out poor quality product. Now this isn't just a Target version of those cute shoes from Nordstrom...these are wellness products that you are putting in or on your body! Producing the purest oils can be very costly. It may require as much as hundreds of pounds of a product just to produce one pound of pure essential oil. Many of the oils produced in the world today are being used by the perfume industry simply for their aromatic quality. That being said, unnecessary high pressure and high temperature, and other tactics are put into place in order to produce a greater quantity at a greater rate. While these oils still smell nice, they will lack most, if not all of the chemical constituents necessary to produce therapeutic results. So unless you are just in search of a nice smelling oil, I'd refrain from purchasing those oils from the local market until you've done your research to find out where they've come from!

There are 3 ways to use PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE essential oils:

Aromatically, Topically, & Internally.

Aromatic: Aromatic application is the inhalation of either a fine mist or vapor of volatile aromatic components. There are many methods to using essential oils aromatically, my personal favorite is diffusion.

Through diffusion, using essential oils aromatically is beneficial to psychological wellbeing. Good smells make us feel good. Some oils have a stimulating aroma, while others are calming and soothing. Diffusion of essential oils has been found to reduce the amount of airborne chemicals and help to create greater physical and emotional harmony.

I also find this to be the most fun way to use the oils! It's fun to mix & match different oils with one another in search of the perfect blend. There are diffuser blends for almost anything! For some fun diffuser blend ideas check out my  Instagram page!

There are many wonderful diffusers out on the market right now. Here are a few of my favorites:

doTERRA Petal Diffuser (small & easy to use!)

Green Air Spa Vapor 2.0 (Inexpensive & effective!)

Mimi Cat Diffuser (totally cute for the kiddos!)

The feet are the second fastest area of the body to absorb oils because of the large pores. Other quick absorbing areas are behind the ears & on the wrists. Reflex therapy is a simple method of applying oils to contact points in the feet or hands. Refer to the reflexology chart for more details.

For easy application, I love to use roller bottles for topical use. The doTERRA Touch Kit contains 9 ready to use essential oil blends that have been properly mixed with fractionated coconut oil to protect sensitive skin while still delivering the benefits found in each essential oil. To order your own doTERRA touch kit click the link, or contact me at motherhoodessentials1@gmail.com.  doTERRA TOUCH.

There are a number of ways to use EO's internally:

+Sublingual: Placing one to two drops under the tongue. This is one of the most effective ways to take essential oils.

+Capsules: Place 1-10 drops of essential oil inside an empty capsule. (My preference is doTERRA's Veggie Caps.) This is an effective way to take essential oils that have a less desirable taste: like Oregano!

+Beverage: An easy (& yummy) way to take essential oils internally is by adding them to a beverage.

+Cooking: Essential oils can easily be incorporated into your cooking. Just remember they are very concentrated so just 1 drop goes a long way! Check out doTERRA Blog for some yummy recipes that incorporate essential oils!

With SO many ways to use essential oils, once you've began using them it's impossible not to find a way to implement them into your everyday life. Essential oils can be a beautiful, effective tool to have at your fingertips especially when used safely & correctly!

Happy oiling!
