Essential Oils are all the rage right now. With our world re-recognizing the power & benefits of natural remedies, it seems as though EO's are everywhere. When I was first introduced to Essential Oils, I had no idea what they really were. My grandmother had recommended them to me as a remedy to help support my son's digestive system as he was suffering from tummy troubles. (I'll go more into my story another time...) So, I trustingly applied them to the bottom of his feed & tummy (because that's what she told me to do.) And that was my first "experience" with Essential Oils. The first thing I learned about them is that THEY WORK.
Of course, after I saw great success in using them, I had to learn more! So I did lots of reading, research, & asked LOTS of questions. After learning more about the oils, what they are, and how they work, I fell even more in love with the idea of using them in my home and with my family. In my research, I found a LOT of studies using scientific diagrams and filled with words I couldn't pronounce, let alone understand...so for all you simple minded folks like myself--this is a BASIC guide of the 5 things you should know about Essential Oils.
1. The definition of ESSENTIAL OILS:
Essential Oils are substances created inside aromatic plants (plants with an aroma or scent) that are both volatile (they evaporate), and oil soluble (they mix easily with oils and fats.) -Modern Essentials
Need an even more basic explanation? Essential Oils are natural extracts from the seeds, stems, roots, flowers, bark and other parts of plants. If you've ever experienced the aroma of a flower, tree, or fruit what you are experiencing is the power of Essential Oils. But, Essential Oils are so much more than a pretty smell! There are so many benefits to using essential oils, it's truly amazing. Essential oils have been used throughout history in a variety of wellness applications. They are a natural and safe approach to healthcare and wellness. And best of all: they are EFFECTIVE.
2. How Essential Oils Work (very basically):
A little science lesson for you- When you are diagnosed with a bacterial infection your doctor typically gives you a prescription for antibiotics. However, with a viral infection, he/she will send you home to "rest and drink lots of fluids." that is because antibiotics are not effective against viruses which are found inside the cells. Essential oils, however, are able to get inside the cell and are effective against outside threats found on the inside and outside of cells. Pretty interesting, huh?

3. If you want results, you should always use CERTIFIED PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE Essential Oils.
I'm sure many of you have walked through your local health food store and found a shelf full of "essential oils" for prices as low as $5 a bottle and you're thinking to yourself "WHAT A DEAL!?" I mean yeah, it's a great deal if you're looking for a bottle of nice smelling oil to spritz in your home for an air freshener...but if you're in search of something you would put on yourself or your children in an effort to help support your body, then back away from that bottle! That is why for myself and my family, I only use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) oils through doTERRA. Not only do they provide myself and my family with CPTG oils, but they go above and beyond doing good for others through sourcing the best oils. You can check out more about that HERE.
Essential Oils embody the regenerating, protective, and immune-strengthening properties of the plants they come from which is why you want to make sure that you essential oils that you are using are actually from the plants they claim to be coming from. If not, then the essential oils you are using simply embody the synthetic combination of chemicals used to create the oil which doesn't really sound like something I want to rub on my body, or my children's.
4. There are 3 ways to use Essential Oils: Aromatically, Topically, & Internally.
This one is going to be very brief as I will have an entire post dedicated to this topic right here.
Aromatic: Through diffusion, using essential oils aromatically is beneficial to psychological wellbeing. Good smells make us feel good. Some oils have a stimulating aroma, while others are calming and soothing.
Topical: Due to their molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed through the skin and can be very beneficial when applied SAFELY. Because these oils are PURE and STRONG in nature, you should always use safety precautions when using them topically. While many oils are safe to use "neat" or on their own, dilution is a great way to safely use essential oils topically. Dilute with a carrier oil. My carrier oil of choice is Fractionated Coconut Oil. It's scent-free and in liquid form making it easy to mix with oils. There isn't an EXACT science (maybe there is, but not one I'm aware of...) to diluting, but here is a handy guide to help you dilute SAFELY for your little ones.
Internal: Essential Oils can also be used as dietary supplements. Some are known for their antioxidant properties, while others are great for inflammation. MOST Essential Oils are safe for ingestion but NOT ALL are. So make sure that before using an oil internally you check that the bottle specifies that it may be used for that purpose!
5. You do not have to be an expert to use essential oils safely & correctly. You just need to be literate.
Confession: I am not as much of an Essential Oil expert as I may seem...the truth is most of this information I have learned from the amazing resources I have in my home. The two books I would recommend to anyone and everyone looking to begin their journey as oilers are Modern Essentials & The Essential Life. You can purchase these books here: MODERN ESSENTIALS & here: THE ESSENTIAL LIFE.
And of course, there are so many great people out there sharing their tips and tricks for using essential oils out there! One thing I LOVE about the Essential Oil community is that everyone is always willing to share how they use their oils and their story.
